Boerne's Richter Bakhaus baking Texas-sized cinnamon rolls that are a must-try | Neighborhood Eats

The giant pastry has become so popular that people don't mind waiting in line for it.

BOERNE, Texas — Think you can handle this sugar rush?

A Boerne bakery is serving up a monster cinnamon roll that’s bigger than your morning coffee—and probably your appetite.

This week, Neighborhood Eats is checking out Richter Bakhaus.

If that’s not impressive enough, you need to meet the shop’s executive baker Emma Lutz. The young but very talented pastry chef is a graduate of the Culinary Institute of America in New York, and now serves the Boerne community.

“I do all of our pastries that we have in stock, we do special orders for cookies, we do bread orders, we do our famous cinnamon roll,” said Lutz.

She calls the $10 Texas sized cinnamon roll a “happy accident”. It was created just a few years ago when another staff member made a batch too big. The larger size turned out to be a hit and remains very popular among customers to this day.

In fact, it’s a viral sensation on social media and creates a line outside of the store on weekends.

“It’s kind of a rush in the morning when we start to see the line form outside – usually we have a line that goes wrapped to the parking lot like a snake and we get through it as fast as we can," she said.

Due to its popularity, a maximum of three cinnamon rolls per group is allowed. If the stock drops below 20, the limit is then changed to one per group. Lutz suggests calling 24 hours in advance if you want more to eat.

Another deeply delicious dish is the bagel lox. The heavily seeded bun is loaded with cream cheese, capers tomato, onion and salmon. Lutz said Richter Bakhaus is one of the only places in Boerne to offer this savory brunch staple.

The shop also serves homemade ice cream. Flavors vary but our team enjoyed the cookie monster ice cream, which has micro chocolate chips and two kinds of cookies crumbled in between. Try it with a cone or cookie! For the adults, you can also add booze!

What’s a bakery without some hot java?! We tried the hot cinnamon latte, which goes perfect with a hot cinnamon roll. For only drinking black coffee most days, our morning reporter enjoyed sipping on this one.

Richter Bakhaus is located at 153 South Main Street in Boerne. Customers can also enjoy their other offerings on site such as Cork & Keg, Richter Tavern and the exclusive Club Oben.
