Flood recovery milestone: 75 elevation studies completed in Kerr County as first family returns home

A Kerr County family is finally returning home after their house was lifted above the floodplain, marking a full recovery path just months after devastating floods.

CENTER POINT, Texas — A major step forward in Kerr County’s flood recovery is now helping families get back home.

Officials say 75 elevation studies have been completed for properties in the floodplain following the devastating July 4, 2025 flood, giving homeowners a clearer path to rebuild safely.

These studies are critical. Without them, homeowners can’t get permits to rebuild.

But one family’s journey is now showing what that full recovery can look like.

The Blackledge home in Center Point became the first to move through every step, from assessment to elevation, reconstruction and now, returning home.

After engineers determined the house needed to be raised, crews lifted it three feet above the floodplain in October. Just five months later, the homeowner is set to move back in.

“It's about giving people a future and security,” said Michelle Bruninga with Annie’s Helping Hands Foundation, which is leading the effort.

More than 100 additional elevation studies are expected to be completed by the end of April as recovery efforts continue across the county.
