SAN ANTONIO — It is a family affair at The Ridge at the Hill nearly two years new at New Braunfels Road and I-35.
"I would say that it is 'elevated comfort cuisine' that we get to showcase on the east side now," said general manager and family daughter Amanda Dortman.
Dortman does the family business with her parents and two other siblings.
"I would say that it is really interesting," she said. "I wouldn’t have it any other way. Everybody gets along just great."
After many years on the south side, the family packed up to relocate starting fresh, so to speak, on San Antonio's east side. And they simply picked up where they left off.
And their newfound success? Well, that's no secret at all.
"Like there are no 'if’s, and’s or but’s' about it,'" said Dortman. "We’re probably the best [restaurant] in the area. But also the bloodline behind it is just amazing."
And that's how they would describe the menu: comfort food meeting elevation.
"We have anywhere from a basic burger which is pretty good," she said. "Well I’d say really good. And then we have our staples which are our blackened fish tacos and our house specialties which I tell everybody you have to try because they are not going to be here very long."
And you can imagine we tried some stuff alright. The Ridge Burger! Check out the picture! Bacon, guacamole and then, of course, the sunny side up egg! Who in the world doesn't love that? I loved it for sure!
And then we tried their house staple: blackened fish tacos. It hit me right! As good as you'll find on the east side!
"It’s a black and white cod fish with our homemade blackened seasoning on there, and our creamy poblano sauce on top that we make in house," said Dortman.
And then we elevated with one of those house specials, their Asiago Crusted Flounder.
"I tell everyone that if it is on the blackboard, definitely get it because it sells out fast," said Dortman. "It is just so good with the lemon sauce on top."
I loved it! It right down the middle with the dirty rice and grilled squash and zucchini on the side. I'd highly recommend that dish the next time it comes back, whenever that is.
And keep in mind their location just off the access road at New Braunfels Road and Interstate 35. That is just minutes from the Frost Bank Center. It is the perfect pregame pre-event start for Spurs games or any big event inside the arena.
"Nothing better than comfort food on the east side," Dortman said. "Pair it with a drink or some tea and we’ll be here for ya."
