THE QUESTION
Is it true that you should never put a loose blanket in a crib with a baby?
THE SOURCES
- Elina Furman, a baby massage expert
- The American Academy of Pediatrics
THE ANSWER
TRUE
WHAT WE FOUND
Furman says to keep the crib clear and to never put any loose bedding inside.
"It's super important to understand that babies, especially when they're super young, they don't have the ability to lift their neck or head. So if they are in a situation where they have obstructed breathing, then they will be it will be very dangerous for them," said Furman.
The American Academy of Pediatrics agrees and said:
"Use a crib, bassinet or portable play yard with a firm, flat mattress and a fitted sheet. Keep loose blankets, pillows, stuffed toys, bumpers and other soft items out of the sleep space. This recommendation is based on data around infant sleep deaths and guidelines for reducing the risk of SIDS."
So yes, it is true. You should never put a loose blanket in a crib with a baby.
The American Academy of Pediatrics also says after 12 months, for most babies, it is safe to give them a loose blanket. But talk to your personal pediatrician first just to make sure it okay for your child.
