SAN ANTONIO — We've all heard that lottery proceeds go to help different groups, depending on the state you live in. In this edition of Verify, we look into one claim that was emailed to us, about where the Texas Lottery proceeds go.
The Texas Lottery says since 1992, it has generated more than $40 billion in revenue for several causes in Texas, including education, veterans' services and other important state programs. That leads us to tonight's claim submitted by KENS 5 viewer Antonio Mendez.
THE QUESTION
Is it true that Texas lottery proceeds benefit veterans? And if so, how?
THE SOURCES
- The Texas Lottery
THE ANSWER
TRUE
WHAT WE FOUND
The lottery told us since the Legislature directed funds from veterans-themed scratch ticket games to the Fund for Veterans' Assistance, or FVA, in 2009, the Texas Lottery has contributed more than $257 million to the FVA to support veterans' services in Texas through Nov. 2024.
On their website the Texas Lottery explains, "The FVA then makes grants available to eligible charitable organizations, local government agencies, and Veterans Service Organizations that provide direct services to Texas veterans and their families. More than 90 percent of the revenue contributed to the fund is derived from the sales of the Texas Lottery veterans' games."
So yes, it is true, the Texas Lottery proceeds do benefit veterans.
