HOUSTON — State officials confirm that Camp Mystic has officially applied for a license renewal to reopen for the upcoming summer season.
Nearly nine months have passed since the catastrophic July 4 floods killed more than 130 people in the Texas Hill Country. Among those who died were 27 Camp Mystic campers and counselors.
Officials confirmed they received Camp Mystic's license renewal application as of Tuesday, which is the final day for youth camps to file for a license or license renewal.
The camp's Cypress Lake campus is aiming to reopen for summer 2026. Per a March 4 ruling by Travis County Judge Maya Guerra Gamble, the camp's Guadalupe campus cannot be altered, modified or used for camp operation purposes. The Guadalupe campus is where the 27 campers and counselors were staying when they were killed in the July 4 floodwaters.
Camp Mystic's legal team has filed an appeal for the temporary injunction, which has yet to be officially discussed as of publication.
State officials said that the process to review the license renewal application will take several weeks, as applications are reviewed in the order they are received. The process will allow officials to review the application materials and emergency plan before conducting a pre-licensure inspection.
KHOU 11 has reached out to Camp Mystic for comment regarding the decision to apply for a license renewal. They released the following statement:
"Camp Mystic has submitted a license application for Camp Mystic Cypress Lake with the Texas Department of State Health Services. The Camp Mystic Cypress Lake campus is in compliance with all aspects of the state’s new camp safety laws and has implemented additional safety measures that exceed the requirements of those laws."
