VERIFY | Does Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick's post reflect how Texans really feel about marijuana sales?

Patrick used information from a University of Houston poll that was released on Tuesday.

HOUSTON — It's a hot-button issue for Texans -- marijuana and THC. While other states legalize them, what should we do?

A post made Tuesday morning on social media by Lieutenant Governor Dan Patrick citing huge support for a ban on THC consumables now has more than 12,000 views. Patrick pulled the number from a new University of Houston survey released earlier today.

So, is the lieutenant governor's claim accurate?

The survey released Tuesday by the Hobby School of Public Affairs at UH looked into how Texans feel about various marijuana-related topics. Lt. Governor Dan Patrick posted on X showing Texans support a legislative ban on the unregulated sale of THC consumables by retail outlets. But does this give a full picture of how Texans really feel about marijuana sales in the state?

We went directly to one of the lead authors of the survey, UH Senior Research Fellow Mark Jones. One of the questions asked was about a proposed piece of legislation calling for a ban on the sale of all forms of consumable THC in Texas.

The results show that 55% of the Texans surveyed are in support of a ban.

So the lieutenant governor's post is accurate, but according to Mark Jones, Texans' opinions differ greatly when it comes to support for medical marijuana and recreational marijuana.

"One thing that's clear is that Texans make a very strong distinction between medical marijuana, which has overwhelming support of 79%, and recreational marijuana, which is supported by 62%," he said. "So there's a group of Texans who do not want to see recreational marijuana legalized but do want to see patients who need medical marijuana have access to it."

So while we can verify that a majority of Texans support a ban on consumable THC, we can also verify, according to this survey, that a majority of Texans also support the sale and use of recreational marijuana.
