Yes, the Canadian government is warning Americans about tariffs with billboard campaign

Viewers spotted the billboards along several Georgia highways claiming tariffs impact things like your groceries or the price you pay at the pump.

ATLANTA — Driving along the highway, you can get used to familiar faces on billboards and ads, but a new sign popping up across metro Atlanta has certainly caught drivers' attention.

They warn against tariffs and claim to be from Canada, but is that true?

THE QUESTION

Are billboards warning about the negative impacts of tariffs really from Canada's government?

OUR SOURCES

  • Global Affairs Canada, the Canadian governmental agency that manages diplomatic relations, promotes international trade, and provides consular assistance.

THE ANSWER

This is true.

Yes, it's true. The Canadian government has backed a series of billboards across the United States to advocate against tariffs.

WHAT WE FOUND:

11Alive reached out to Global Affairs Canada, which sent us a statement confirming it was behind billboards popping up all over several states in the U.S.

"The Government of Canada has launched an educational campaign to inform Americans of the economic impacts of tariffs," it said in its statement. "The campaign is a strategic investment in Canada's long-term economic interests, and its trade relationship with the United States."

The statement, similar to the billboards, says that tariffs are a tax on hard-working Americans in their daily lives.

It added that tariffs lead to higher costs on everyday essentials like gas and groceries.

Georgia isn't alone in seeing these new digital billboards pop up.

Canada's government said people in Arizona, Colorado, Florida, Michigan, Minnesota, Nevada, New Hampshire, North Carolina, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Wisconsin, and the Washington, D.C. area can all expect to see the billboards in their states if they haven't already.
